Friday November 1st

Hello all!

We have had a wonderful week in Kindergarten working on some new topics! On Monday we discussed making predictions. We read the story "Sam and Dave Dig a Hole." In the story, Sam and Dave start digging down into a big hole, they dig so far they start to fall down! We stopped on this page:

And students had to write a guess about where they thought Sam and Dave might land:

After drawing our ideas - we met back up to find out where Sam and Dave do land. Ask your student if they remember where!

This week we also started to discuss number sense and numbers 1-10 in the classroom. We worked on building numbers with snap cubes during literacy centers.

On Wednesday the afternoon class also went on a "number walk" throughout the school. Our goal was to look around our environment to see how numbers are used in our school. We used clipboards and paper to record the places we found numbers and what they looked liked. After our walk, we listed some of our discoveries on chart paper:

Practice at Home

If you are interested, feel free to practice counting to 10 at home. Students can count any kind of objects, and practice writing numbers as well. Feel free to count past 10, but in Kindergarten we focus on 0-10.

Here is an online game for counting as well (click to access):

Week Ahead

Next week we will be continuing out exploration of numbers 1-10. We will start to practice writing the numbers as well as representing their quantities visually and concretely. We will also be looking at the letter B on Monday! On Friday November 8th the AM class will also attend our school-wide Remembrance Day ceremony (at 10:45 - families are welcome to attend, and PM families feel free to attend with your student as well.) Throughout the week we will be discussing the topic of peace, and we will explore the meaning of Remembrance Day through some picture books, songs and activities. Also, next week we will have our lovely student teacher - Ms.S back in the classroom. She has been in and out of the classroom since September, but starting Monday we are excited to have her in the classroom full time until the end of November. From Ms. S:

Hello! My name is Ms. S and I am a third year Mount Royal University practicum student. I will be joining Ms. Weir and the Kindergarten classrooms for the month of November, furthering my educational knowledge to become a future educator. I have a passion for animals and sports, and I LOVE crafts and baking! I am really looking forward to becoming a part of the Kindergarten family :)
