Hello Kindergarten families!

It was a fabulous week in Kindergarten! Yesterday we tried chalk pastels for the first time (sorry to everyone who discovered this by the state of some of our clothing at the end of art time 😁)

We will be adding to these chalk pastel backgrounds in the coming weeks to make some art, check back for updates!

This week we also continued working on shapes! We did some shape problems in our math journals, and are working on other activities during our literacy center time and play center time.

We also focused on comprehension this week. We read "I want my hat back" by John Klassen, and wrote about one event that happened in the story to practice our recall. Recalling main events in the story is the first step to building reading comprehension.

In literacy centers, we have been continuing to build on our understanding of the alphabet, and have been practicing letter identification and some simple writing skills.

Today the PM Kindegartens had a visit from Ms. Judy from "Outdoors In." She talked to us about wolves and beavers, and we learned lots about them by playing some games, singing songs and even dressing up like them!

Week Ahead

Next week we will continuing working on our comprehension skills by practicing retelling events from a story. This will be embedded in our literacy center time, as well as during our daily read alouds. We will also be continuing to look at shapes, and how the connect to our Social Studies topic of community. We will look at how shapes are part of architecture, and how architecture and buildings are a part of what makes a community. Next Friday, we will also have Outdoors In return for the AM Kindegarten class, who will also be doing their 2nd session of CAD!

Practice at Home

If possible, please try to ensure you are reading stories and books with your child at home. Having conversations about what you read and asking them questions such as, "what was your favorite part?" and "what did the book remind you of" help them develop their reading comprehension skills as well!

Reminders

1.) Next Friday, March 15th is AM Kindergarten

2.) Some school fundraising information is coming home today (for PM) and AM students will receive it on Monday. Please check home folders!

3.) There are many students with overdue library books at the moment. Please check at home and send back any books that are overdue! Overdue lists will be sent home next week!

Have a great weekend!
