Friday Forecast - Spring Break!

Hello Kindergarten families!

Thank you to everyone who made it out to parent-teacher conferences. If you were unable to schedule an appointment, please feel free to contact me to arrange another time to meet after Spring Break!

We had a great week in Kindergarten this past week! It was great to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather we have been getting lately. Yesterday we painted the "bark rubbings" we made in our naturalization area, and will be using them to create some artwork in the weeks following spring break!

Also, last week on Friday I was away, but here are some pictures of "Outdoors In" that the AM Kindergarten did that day!

In the weeks following Spring Break, we will continue to look at shapes and will specifically be focusing on 3D shapes. We will also be continuing to work on reading comprehension strategies in focused literacy times, and build on our strategy of "retelling events" to include identifying the problem within a story. Home reading will also be starting up after Spring Break, more information about that will be forthcoming!

Practice at Home

We have been working on letter recognition in Kindergarten, including both capital and lowercase letters. Recently we have also started to focus on letter sounds. Ensuring your child knows all of the letters of the alphabet as well as their corresponding sounds is great preparation for Grade 1 and an awesome thing to practice at home! Here are some fun activities you can work on if you have some extra time over the break and following weeks:

Talk to Me Alphabet

This is a little online tool that we have used to practice letter sounds and their names. You can switch it to "keyboard" mode to challenge your child to identify the letters out of order!

Building/Making

Building and making letters out of lego, playdo, craft supplies, paint or any bits and bobs is also a fun way to practice letter recognition!

Games

There are also lots of online games that are easily accessible on a tablet or computer. Here is one we have tried before:

Flashcards

Using flashcards is also a quick and easy way to practice. Try doing a few every day, and work up to the whole alphabet. It's easy to make flashcards with a pen and some paper, but if you have access to a printer, here is a set you can print out!

Reminders

1.) Spring Break is March 23rd - March 31st. We will see you again on Monday April 1st!

2.) Please gather any "beautiful stuff" that you are able to share with us for the week after Spring Break!

I hope every one has a wonderful Spring Break! Enjoy the sun!

~ Ms. Weir
