Friday October 4th
Hello all,
This week in Kindergarten we spent some time each day discussing the meaning of orange shirt day, and working on some activities to explore the topic and what it meant. We talked about how Phyllis Webstad had her orange shirt taken away when she went to a residential school, and how that made her feel sad and like she didn't matter, which is why she started Orange Shirt Day. We read some stories about what some people experienced at residential schools, and talked about how we can make sure every child feels like they matter.
Students explored making their own orange shirts with loose parts, and also created orange hearts with tissue paper. They drew pictures of their ideas for how we can make sure all children can feel like they are special and they matter. The students did a great job creating their artwork and honouring orange shirt day - thank you to all who wore orange in support.
During literacy centers we continued to explore patterns in Math, practice the letter F and worked on writing our names. During focused math time, students also starting working on their own pattern booklet. They started off with "AB" patterns, which are those that have two repeating attributes. Some students were able to create more complex patterns, such as AABB patterns or ABC patterns.
Week Ahead
Next week we will work on another "frog jump" letter, the letter E. In Math we will add to our pattern booklets and start to apply our understanding of patterns to some problems. Students will also continue discussing "All About Me" as their social studies topic, and we be focusing on emotions and how they can look and feel. Students will also be introduced to "The Zones of Regulation" next week, which is a system we will be using in the classroom to help students understand how to regulate their emotions and communicate their feelings.
Reminders
1.) Next Friday October 11th is a PD day, and there is no school for either class
2.) Monday October 14th there is no school (Thanksgiving)
3.) Both classes have visited the library this week - AM went Thursday, PM today. Please continue to send back library books after you have read them, they can come back any time but please send them back before the next library visit. Students cannot take out another book until they have brought back the one they already have.
Next Thursday October 10th both classes will visit the library!
Have a great weekend!
