Friday Forecast

Hello Kindergarten Families!

This week in Kindergarten we continued to work on numbers 1-10. Throughout the week we worked on numeracy activities to practice counting and showing numbers up to 10.

On Friday, the AM class also worked on some Math games that Ms. S introduced to us! We tried out a variety of different games, and will keep practicing them during literacy centers.

On Thursday, we also started our first science experiment! We have been discussing snow and snowflakes lately, as we have noticed that while it's still technically Fall, there is a lot more snow on the ground than there are leaves!!! So, Ms.S showed us how to make snowflakes out of pipecleaners...

...And we placed them inside a tank full of water and borax to see what will happen! We talked about the words "solution," "dissolve" and "hypothesis." We recored our hypotheses/predictions in our visual journals, and we're excited to see what happens next! Many students think the snowflakes are going to turn "real" or maybe even change colour!

Week Ahead

Next week, we are going to review the "frog jump" letters we have covered so far in writing. The "frog jump" capitals are called such because the capital letters all start with a straight line down the left, and then a jump to the top. On Monday, we will be sending home a work sample that shows how your child is doing with writing "frog jump" capitals. Please check home folders Monday! Throughout the week, we will continue to look at our snowflakes and investigate some of the seasonal changes that are happening right now. We will also be reading the book "The Hat" which is by the same author of "The Mitten." Students will be asked to make connections between these stories, and we will talk about if we can use any clues from "The Mitten" to help us guess what "The Hat" might be about. In Math, we will continue to focus on numbers 1-10.

Please note, next Tuesday we will have a lock down drill. See the below memo for more information:

E: LOCKDOWN PRACTICE & Safety Procedures

November 28, 2019

Dear Cambrian Heights School Families,

The safety of all students and staff of Cambrian Heights School is of great importance. To that end, we have been working to establish appropriate safety measures for the various situations that may occur and affect our staff and students. Fire drills are a long-standing expectation of everyone who congregates in a setting such as a school. We are required to have a minimum of six fire drills each school year. Our students and staff treat each drill as though it was the real thing and we are very proud of their performance during those drills. Teachers keep class lists with them during all drills and attendance is always taken. Parents or other visitors are expected to evacuate the building when the fire alarm is sounded.

It is a reflection of the changes in our society that we must add variations to our safety drills. We are going to practice a drill known as a “lockdown” on Tuesday, December 3, 2019. The teachers will be instructing students regarding their role during a drill of this kind. No one is allowed to enter or leave the building during a lockdown procedure.

As we continue to refine our school safety procedures, other safety precautions we now have in place include:
§ Locking All Doors
§ A Fan Out Procedure – has been established to ensure clear and swift communication with parents in the event of an emergency.
§ Visitors – are expected to register at the office
§ Volunteers – must complete a Police Information Check (PIC) and wear nametags at all times
§ Substitute Teachers – are provided with emergency information upon entering the school.

Teachers are trained in first aid and have thoroughly reviewed emergency plans with the children. We appreciate your support in these very important matters.
