Today we worked on a Math problem that challenged us to use our number sense. The problem was:
Ms.Weir has a tray of fruit, she only has apples and bananas. There are 8 pieces of fruit on the tray. How many are apples, and how many are bananas?
First we worked on the smartboard to discuss our ideas. The students were let in on a secret, there are actually 7 different ways to solve this problem!
They worked on their solutions in their visual journals:
We used red and yellow bears to show apples and bananas. This question was all about using the "part part whole" concept. Students had to figure out that there were lots of different ways to make 8! This concept is the building block for understanding addition and subtraction.
We also used a target to self-assess our understanding. The bullseye in the middle was finding all 7 different ways, and the second layer was finding 1-2 ways. The outside layer was for students who thought they might need more practice. We will continue to work on using the target to self assess our work over the coming weeks!
