Hello Kindergarten Families,

Thank you to everyone who made it out to parent conferences last week! It was great seeing you all again and sharing the learning your students have been engaged in over the past few months. If you haven't touched based with me yet regarding a meeting - please contact me at your earliest convenience so we can arrange a time to chat!

This past week was all about snowflakes! We took time to investigate our experiment from last week, and saw that our snowflakes grew crystals! We worked on an art project that is going to be inspired by snowflakes. First we created backgrounds using the "wet on wet" watercolour technique.

We then learned how to cut snowflakes out of newspaper - these will be added on top of our beautiful water colour backgrounds. Our snowflake art will be on display next Wednesday at our Winter Celebration!

Cutting our snowflakes out was great timing, as Ms.Lynne was in to visit us this week to work on cutting skills! She shared many helpful tips with us and we practiced cutting out windows for a bus. Her big tips for us are to make sure we cut paper away from the table, so that we can ensure we are using our "helper hand" to turn the paper and our scissors hand stays straight. Cutting is a great activity to practice at home to build fine motor control!

In Math, we worked on practicing some more fun games to work on the concept of more than, fewer than and as many as.

We played "Battle" which would be a fun one to try at home! Just divide up a deck of cards between two players, and each draw a card from your pile at the same time. The player with the bigger number keeps the two cards, and if it's a tie, you both keep your own. Then, repeat until all the cards are gone, the winner is whoever has the biggest pile in the end. We said J,Q,K were worth 10, and A were worth 1.

We also worked on "Make a Train." Students rolled a dice, and added the same number of blocks to their "train" that they rolled. Dice are great to practice subitizing!

This week was bittersweet, as we also said goodbye to our wonderful student teacher Ms.S. The students had a GREAT time working with her, and everyone is so sad to see her go! However, she promised she might be back to visit in the future :) We are so grateful to all the work Ms.S did with us over the past five weeks, we will definitely miss her!

Week Ahead

Next week we will finish up our snowflake art, and work on some writing to pair with it as well. Snowflakes will continue to be an ongoing investigation, and we will add some snowflake centers to our literacy centers as well as "big centers." We will finish up our exploration of numbers 1-10, and start to get ready for our next Math topic, which will be Shape and Space. We will also start to look at the next group of letters, the "corner capitals," starting with the letter H. Hopefully next week we will also have time to visit with our Buddies!
