Hello all!

This week was all about shapes! We have been drawing, talking about, making and creating all kinds of 2D shapes. During literacy centers, students have been creating shapes with elastic bands on the geoboards, and exploring their properties using pattern blocks and other tools.

On Tuesday, we started to look more specifically at the properties of different 2D shapes. Students were given a chart to fill out to record how many sides and corners each shape had, as well as if it was made of curvy lines. They worked in small groups to investigate.

The next day, we created class chart to compare our notes. We thought about the relationship between sides and corners. We noticed that most shapes have the same number of sides and corners - but not all! Ask your student if they can remember which shapes don't have the same number of corners and sides. We wondered if it's only circles and ovals that have a different number of sides and corners...

Today, we went outside to explore shapes in nature. We also worked on our first math problem involving shapes - students were asked, "I have two shapes in my basket, together the sides add up to 7. What shapes do I have?"

They used pattern blocks to try and solve the problem, and recorded their work in their visual journals. They did a great job discovering the two shapes that could be in there. At the end of the day we found out there was a triangle and a trapezoid!

Week Ahead

Next week we will be continuing to explore the topic of community in more depth. We will start to look at different aspects of communities, and explore building and drawing communities during center time. We will be focusing on adding detail to our writing throughout the week as well, mainly in our Explore Journals (where we write about what we do in centers.) During Math we will be looking at some more shape problems, and start to apply our understanding of shapes to see how they are embedded in our every day lives!

Reminders

1.) Report cards are coming home today for PM and yesterday for AM. Please sign the report card envelope and return it ASAP. The report card inside is yours to keep!

2.) A literacy sample has been posted to your child's Iris account - please check it out when you have a moment! A rubric will be coming home next week that assesses the sample posted to Iris.

3.) Next Friday January 31st there is no school - PD day

4.) And.... introducing the Lost and Found wall! Every week I will post a picture of our Lost and Found items from the classroom. If you see something familiar, please let me know and I will send the item(s) back with your child!

Have a wonderful weekend!
