January 28th - Literacy Samples Coming Home!

Hello all!

Last week your child's Iris account was updated with a work sample from their Explore Journals. In this journal, students record drawings (and some words) about what they did at centers. In Kindergarten, most of us aren't writing yet. So, our drawings are our writing! Even though we aren't using words yet, our pictures still can explain our ideas and thoughts.

In Kindergarten we have been working on ensuring our pictures include good details, and match our experiences and ideas. Meaning, when asked about the picture, a student can provide a verbal explanation that matches what they drew.

This "Writing Development Continuum" helps provide an idea of how we want to see writing and drawing progress in Kindergarten.

This "continuum" is coming home today with each student. Please check your child's home folder to find out where your student is currently at with their writing and drawing. The continuum is an assessment of the work in their Explore Journal. So please ensure you take a look at their work on Iris while looking at the continuum.

Please note, the numbers on the continuum DO NOT match with the numerals used on the report card (ie, if your student is a 2 on the continuum, they are not necessarily a 2 on their report card.)

The continuum is just a tool to help you see where your student is at currently, and the steps that are ahead of them. Every student is at a different spot, and that's great! We are focused on moving forward on the continuum, and the goal isn't necessarily to get to the end of the continuum.

Please contact me if you have any questions about your student's work!

Reminders

1.) Thank you to everyone who has returned report card envelopes already! If you haven't already, please review your child's report card, sign the envelope and return it in their home folder. I will not take report cards out of folders until I see that it is signed (to be sure you have seen it.)

2.) This Friday there is no school - PD day

3.) A notice about the next fundraiser at Cambrian Heights is also coming home, it looks like this;

Have a great evening!
