Hello all!
It's been a busy week in Kindergarten as usual! This week we continued to discuss our next "big idea" topic, which is community. Ask your student if they can show you the hand signal we use to remember what this word means! We have been talking about how community is something that brings people together.
We looked at the book "All are Welcome" this week, which is about how school is a type of community that welcomes people from everywhere. Students wrote in their visual journals about the types of things that they like about school, and made connections between their own lives and our school community. We also practiced a new strategy, "Big Bold and Bright" to make sure our pictures clearly communicate our ideas.

Since using the strategy "Big Bold and Bright" we have definitely seen a lot of growth in our "writing." Students have been doing an awesome job of drawing clear pictures that show their thinking!
After all of our discussions about school community, the students became very interested in the concept of school. At the dramatic play center, the students started to play "school" and act out different scenarios. We had some students be teachers, others play the role of student, and some even became a principal. We are going to be looking at turning the Winter Center into a "School Center" over the coming week!
Week Ahead
Next week we will look at some writing involving our new "School Center." We will discuss with both classes what we need to make the School Center authentic. We will make a list of materials we need, as well as think about who we need to talk to for more information. Maybe we need to invite Mr. Whitton into our classroom to learn more about what a principal does! In Math we will also connect the topic of community to our recent exploration of shapes. We will look at the shapes we can find within houses, and create our own houses using shapes. If you have a picture of the outside of your home to share, and are willing to, please email it to me!
